Stoneybatter Student Residences

Elkstone

The Stoneybatter Place Student Residential scheme is a recently-completed 139-bed scheme, constructed in 25 Clusters of up to 8 beds on a tight urban site in Stoneybatter located very close to the Grangegorman Campus. It was an extremely challenging site to achieve compliance with EN 17073 Daylight/Sunlight requirements, and Metec undertook the most challenging roles in this high-density development – Daylight/Sunlight Assessment, Building Lifecycle Assessment, Energy/Part L compliance, BREEAM Certification and Mechanical & Electrical Design.

Challenges

Achieving the Client’s requirement for compliance with EN 17073 calculation criteria for a minimum 96% of all Living/Kitchen/Dining and Bedrooms on such a confined site was a challenge for Metec and the Architect. In addition, generation of hot water to NZEB standards required the highest-efficiency heat pump technology, and we also pushed the boundaries of good ventilation design with heat recovery ventilation in each cluster. At a late stage in the process the Client requested certification to BREEAM very good standard, which required additional design input to achieve. Metec undertook the BREEAM assessment and certification process.

Successes

Metec’s design has been vindicated, with full BCAR, Part L and BREEAM certification achieved for a very satisfied client.

Metec Solutions

Metec’s design achieved an A3 Energy Rating for the development, including Hot Water Heat Pump technology. Whilst not required for Part F Ventilation, Metec strongly advised the installation of Heat Recovery Ventilation throughout to ensure continuous fresh filtered air to the student population, which was accepted by the Client. At a late stage in the project Metec undertook LEED and BREEAM assessments of the scheme, and pursued the BREEAM process through to a Very Good Certification on behalf of the Client.
