What is Metec’s Design Support Service?
Metec provides bespoke design support services tailored to help data centre contractors deliver their Contractor Design Portion (CDP). From the project’s pre-construction phase to completion, our expert team develops designs that are coordinated at the project’s early stages. In this manner, clash-free models become more achievable, risks are identified and mitigated early, thereby avoiding critical design and constructability challenges in the long run.
We understand that most contractors excel in project management, but often lack the in-house design bandwidth to:
Create fully developed designs from scratch - from M&E Schematics to detailed GA Layouts.
Perform detailed
technical calculations (e.g.,
energy modelling, CFD analysis, equipment sizing
and selection that meet project and site constraints).

Propose alternative M&E systems that better make use of available data hall space and put forward latest technological solutions like modular plants, DCLC and submerged cooling.
Finalise M&E designs to 100% accuracy for smooth site installations.
Provide a detailed ESP calculation report using industry-leading tools as the ASHRAE DuctFitting Database to confirm that offsets and design changes from design to actual construction are within acceptable limits.
Propose Value Engineering opportunities backed up by theoretical calculations and/or CFD, when and if called up by the client.
Verify hydraulic equilibrium and determine steady state time required.
Utilise Psychrometric analysis as a means to pinpoint design discrepancies that can bring about risks to condensation and waste of energy.
This is where Metec steps in, bridging the gap to ensure CDPs are completed to the highest quality, on time and on budget.
Why is Metec’s Design Support Service Important? What are the benefits to contractors?
Our integrated M+E+S approach delivers multiple benefits for contractors facing tight programmes and complex project demands:

Streamlined Programme Delivery
Integrated designs align M&E and sustainability strategies from the outset, speeding up decision-making and reducing costly delays.
Cost Saving
Optimised energy-efficient designs lower operational costs and maximise lifecycle value.
Reduced Carbon Footprint
Sustainability is embedded at every stage, incorporating renewable energy, green technologies, low partial PUE (pPUE) components, low GWP/ODP systems, and efficient systems to reduce emissions.
Enhanced Quality
Fully coordinated and clash-free models eliminate design gaps, ensuring accuracy from concept to construction.
Future-Proofed Projects
Our solutions anticipate the evolving challenges of data centre operations, EU regulations, enhancing building performance and resilience.
Compliance with Standards
Designs adhere to LEED, ASHRAE TC 9.9, localCodes/Regulations, BS EN, ISO, NFPA, and country/locality/client-specific guidelines, ensuring top-tier quality.
With Metec, contractors gain a trusted partner who ensures projects meet performance, cost, and environmental targets - every time!
How Does Metec’s Design Support Service Work?
Our process combines precision, expertise, and collaboration:
Concept Review: We assess existing designs technically and spatially and identify gaps that pose risks to constructability, M&E systems’ functionality, future servicing and programme delivery.
Technical Calculations: From Psychrometric to Thermodynamic analysis, air-side and hydraulic pressure losses to equipment sizing and energy modelling, we provide detailed, accurate calculations to guide installation.
3D BIM Modelling: Clash-free models are developed to align shop drawings with site installations, ensuring build ability. E.g. Taking ownership of the design from Stage 4a/4b and bringing these to Stage 5a/5b.
Sustainability Integration: M&E systems are optimised for energy efficiency, PUE improvement, carbon
reduction, and cost savings.

Case Study: Temporary Cooling Plant – Confidential Data Centre, Frankfurt
Metec successfully delivered a 1.7MW temporary cooling plant design for a major data centre project in Frankfurt, Germany.
The Challenge:
Testing critical UPS rooms and MMRs on a tight programme demanded a temporary cooling solution aligned with the client’s budget and schedule.
Our Solution:
The Challenge:
Testing critical UPS rooms and MMRs on a tight programme demanded a temporary cooling solution aligned with the client’s budget and schedule.
Our Solution:
- Designed a full M&E temporary cooling module with duty/standby air- cooled chillers, diesel generators, buffer vessels, heat exchangers, motorised valves assemblies, and circulation pumps with very limited alterations to the already existing M&E services installed.
- Delivered a seamless BMS design integrating existing systems to ensure operational efficiency.
- Provided full technical documentation, including hydraulic modelling, CHW system volume, expansion and pressurisation calculations, Mechanical Schematics, Electrical single-line diagrams and load calculations, GA Layouts, Specifications, Sequence of Operation (SOO), Schedule of Pricing (SOP), M&E equipment schedules, BMS I/O points schedule, supplier data sheets and supplier quotation options, and Temporary Works Register (TWR) highlighting design-
related risks.
The Result:
Delivered the complete M&E IFT pack within a 4–5-week design period, meeting the client’s technical and cost targets despite last-minute changes.
