Metec’s 2022 in Review

October 10, 2023

Workplace Wellbeing at Metec

Earlier this year we enjoyed a welcome reset as we dedicated a whole month to embracing and encouraging wellness in our workplace. From mindful colouring to gratitude journaling and physical activities, we embraced new daily practices intended to sustainably improve our lives.

With the help of the WellFit Method we took part in a personalised body and lifestyle transformation programme designed to help busy professionals make practical and sustainable lifestyle changes. The month culminated in a glorious hike through the Wicklow Mountains, giving us an opportunity to meet up face to face, and a welcome escape from the office and home, to unwind, exercise and take in the beautiful scenery.

This wellness month was the perfect follow-on event after our 2022 town hall meeting at Glenview Hotel & Leisure Club. The townhall had been a resounding success where meeting in person allowed us to facilitate constructive and positive two-way discussions about how to optimise every member of Metec’s skills and talents. Having such engaging and collaborative events so soon afterwards really strengthened our bonds and ignited our team spirit and camaraderie.

Putting the Team in Teamwork

“I have learned that to be successful you have to surround yourself with like-minded people and value everyone’s opinions.” - Cyril Creaven, Director Building Services Design

This year we were delighted to expand our team and welcome new members on board! Everyone we welcome into the Metec fold is into all things Mechanical, Electrical, CAD, BIM, Engineering, Sustainability and Smart Buildings. We have had some fantastically insightful ideas from our new hires, and we are excited for the journey we will all be taking together into the new year. We still have some exciting positions open so if you want to reshape the way you think about your career, check out our opportunities here.

As well as recruiting externally, we recognise our internal talent and support them in their career progression and promotion. We were delighted to announce the appointment of Daniel Lynch to the board of directors. Daniel joined Metec in 2015 and has become an integral part of our ever-growing team. Daniel’s promotion to the board was well deserved as he is highly regarded by his colleagues and peers within the construction industry.

Staying Sustainably Smart

Our dedicated Sustainability Team spent the year continuing to study and augment their qualifications as part of our Development Programme. Special congratulations to Aparna Pradeep, Sustainability Engineer, for passing her LEED AP ID+C exam!

We have been, and will continue to keep, meeting and moving ahead of the ESG needs of our clients and adding to our sustainability consultancy capabilities year on year. Continuing to push the envelope is important to us. We are able to stay match ready for the sustainability challenges in the industry with our Sustainability Team interwoven through each sector we work in, providing tangible science-based platforms for the design team to build from.

In fact, 2022 saw Bakers Yard Apartments certified LEED Gold. This was the first residential project in Ireland to achieve LEED certification. While Navigation Square Cork was the first LEED ID+C Platinum Cert outside of Dublin and the 4th in Ireland.

And the Winner is...

We were exceptionally proud and grateful to be recognised by both our peers and industry leading judges with a range of nominations and awards throughout the year.

In June, leaders from architecture and construction came together at the Building and Architect of the Year Awards. The idyllic Padel Club at Adare Manor was awarded the prestigious Building of the Year award. We were privileged to be part of the design team on this innovative 2,000sqm new build. It truly was a collaborative success in achieving a high-quality finish, with a focus on renewable and sustainable technologies for a challenging project.

In November we were honoured to win Business of the Year at the Bray Chamber Endeavour Awards held in the Mermaid Centre. In the same month we were nominated by a jury of our peers for Professional Consultancy of the Year at the Fit-Out awards. These awards celebrate excellence in the execution of world-class fit outs, and the people and clients who drive these projects. We were proud to be part of the design team for not one, but two winning projects. Horizon Therapeutics won Fit Out Client of the Year and Dropbox Studio Dublin was awarded Fit Out Project of the Year Medium Office.

As the M&E Engineers on the Horizon Therapeutics project our fit-out design focused on utilising the most energy efficient and performance-based equipment to successfully deliver for our client. On the Dropbox project we were required to create an M&E design that would contribute to their workplace philosophy. Dropbox has an inspiring, diverse, informed, and joyful culture and their new space design needed to allow that to thrive.

The Irish Construction Industry Awards which took place in December at The Clayton Hotel in Dublin saw the Primark Store, Rotterdam project recognised by a jury of our peers with a nomination for International Project of the Year. As part of the MEP Engineering team on this complex, city centre project, it was so rewarding to successfully deliver one of the world's largest Primark buildings during a time of rigorous restrictions.

What’s Next for Metec and its team?

2023 will see us continue to grow in an organic way as part of our ever-evolving sustainability landscape. We look forward to expanding and developing our team from the inside and out through new hires, progression, and learning opportunities.

We are excited for the challenges and complex projects that await us on the horizon. Thanks as always to our amazing team, our supply chain, our clients and of course our community. We look forward to strengthening our bonds and working together throughout 2023 and beyond!
